GainsEngine GainsEngine  for UK CGT

Legal · How your data is handled

Privacy Policy.

This policy explains how GainsEngine handles information submitted to and generated by the service.

Your transaction data

The data you upload or paste to calculate your capital gains is processed on our server, but entirely in memory. It is discarded once the response is sent back to you.

The transaction data itself is not written to disk, saved in a database or shared with any third party.

Local storage

The site uses your browser's localStorage to remember your light or dark mode selection and your cookie choice. It also keeps your data and results for the current tab in sessionStorage, so they are still there if you move between pages. This is cleared when you close the tab. This information stays on your device and is not sent to our server. See our Cookie Settings page for more details about cookies.

Analytics and tracking

Google Analytics. With your consent, we use Google Analytics to see how the site is used: pages visited, how you arrived, and your device, browser and IP address. It never receives the files you upload, your transactions or your results. You can withdraw consent at any time on the Cookie Settings page.

Google processes this data for us and may do so in the US, under the UK-US data bridge. It is deleted automatically once it is no longer needed to understand how the site is used.

The feedback form uses Cloudflare Turnstile to block spam, which may process your IP address (see Cloudflare's Privacy Policy).

Usage statistics

We retain limited, aggregated usage statistics to understand how the calculator is used. These include the calculation timestamp, the number of rows processed, the transaction types included (such as BUY, SELL and ERI), which currencies were converted into pounds and how many amounts in each, and which worked examples were run.

These are usage statistics, not transaction records. Your transaction data is not stored. We do not retain instrument names or tickers, trade dates, quantities, prices or transaction amounts.

These aggregated statistics are retained indefinitely.

Server access logs

Our hosting provider may temporarily retain standard technical access logs, such as IP address, request path and timestamp, for operational and security purposes. These logs do not contain the contents of your transaction data.

Your rights

Depending on the circumstances, you may have rights under UK data protection law concerning your personal data, including rights to request access to, correction or deletion of your data, or to object to or restrict certain processing. Where we rely on your consent, you can withdraw it at any time.

If you have questions about your data or wish to exercise your rights, please contact us using our feedback form.

You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).

Feedback and Email communications

If you contact us by email or use our feedback form , the information you provide is stored and retained for as long as reasonably required for operational or legal purposes.
